About This Tour

The Nyungwe Forest canopy walk is one of Rwanda's most iconic tourist experiences — a 200-metre suspension bridge system suspended 50 metres above the rainforest floor, offering extraordinary panoramic views over one of Africa's most biodiverse ancient rainforests.

Nyungwe Forest covers 1,019 km² of montane rainforest in southwest Rwanda and is one of the oldest forests on the African continent. The canopy walkway cuts through the upper forest canopy, placing you at the same level as the tree tops — giving unique perspectives on forest ecology, endemic birds and the sweeping montane landscape.

The walk begins with a 45-minute guided forest trail from the Uwinka visitor centre up to the bridge system. The canopy walk itself takes 20–30 minutes to cross. On clear days, views extend for kilometres across the undulating forest and southwest Rwanda's hills. Angola colobus monkeys — in troops of up to 400 — are frequently seen at canopy level during the walk.

The canopy walk is one of Africa's most easily accessible forest experiences, suitable for all fitness levels and ages (minimum 6 years). It pairs perfectly with chimpanzee trekking or Nyungwe birdwatching and is always included in our multi-day southwest Rwanda itineraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Nyungwe canopy walkway is suspended approximately 50 metres (165 feet) above the forest floor. The bridge extends 200 metres (655 feet) in length, connecting sections of the forest canopy. It is one of the highest and longest canopy walkways in Africa.
The canopy walk entry fee is approximately $60 USD per person, including the guided trail and bridge crossing. Rwanda SafariTours packages the canopy walk with transport from Kigali and chimpanzee trekking for a comprehensive Nyungwe experience.
The canopy walk is sturdy and well-maintained with safety rails throughout. The minimum age is 6 years. People with moderate height anxiety often manage fine — the bridge is wide and solid. However, if you have a severe fear of heights, this activity may not be suitable. The forest trail itself (without the bridge) is excellent regardless.
Yes — this is our recommended combination. Chimpanzee trekking starts early (6 AM), typically finishing by midday. The canopy walk is then done in the afternoon (2–4 hours). Both activities on the same day is a very full but entirely achievable schedule.
