About This Tour

The gorilla habituation experience (GHE) in Rwanda is the most exclusive gorilla encounter available in Africa. Unlike regular gorilla trekking (1 hour), the GHE gives you 4 full hours with a gorilla family that is being habituated — gradually introduced — to human presence over several years under the guidance of RDB researchers and trackers.

Only 4 visitors per day are permitted on each habituation session, making this an extraordinarily intimate experience. You accompany the RDB research team and experienced trackers from very early morning, spending extended time observing natural gorilla behaviours — feeding, socialising, playing, nesting and moving through the forest — that are rarely witnessed on standard treks.

The habituation experience requires excellent physical fitness and is more demanding than regular trekking. The gorillas are in deeper, more rugged forest and sessions can begin before dawn. However, for wildlife photographers, researchers and serious gorilla enthusiasts, this is the ultimate Africa encounter.

Rwanda SafariTours manages all GHE permit bookings through RDB. Permits are extremely limited — we recommend booking 6–12 months in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular gorilla trekking gives you 1 hour with a fully habituated gorilla family. The gorilla habituation experience (GHE) gives you 4 hours with a partially habituated family — gorillas still being introduced to human presence. GHE is more physically demanding, more exclusive (max 4 visitors), and offers a much deeper, more intimate experience. Both permits cost $1,500 in Rwanda.
You need to be in very good physical condition. The GHE involves longer trekking times, earlier starts and deeper forest penetration than regular gorilla trekking. The terrain is steep, uneven and can be muddy. If you have any health conditions, consult a doctor before booking. Minimum age is 15 years.
We strongly recommend booking 6–12 months in advance. Only 4 permits per day are issued for each habituation group, making this the rarest gorilla permit in Rwanda. Contact us as early as possible to check availability.
Yes, the GHE runs year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking conditions and clearer photography. The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) are lush and green but trails are muddier.
