About This Tour
Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) in Rwanda's Northern Province is the most famous national park in Africa for one reason: it is home to the mountain gorilla — one of the world's most endangered great apes. The park protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Massif, a chain of eight volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Covering 160 km², the park is compact but extraordinarily rich. Ten habituated gorilla families are available for trekking — each group visited by maximum 8 tourists per day. Gorilla trekking is the primary activity and one of the world's premier wildlife experiences, but the park offers much more.
Golden monkey tracking ($100 permit) targets the rare Cercopithecus kandti — found only in the Virunga volcanoes — in the bamboo zone. Volcano hiking options include the challenging Karisimbi summit (4,507 m, 2 days) and the accessible Bisoke crater lake hike (2,620 m, full day). The Dian Fossey tomb trek takes you to Karisoke Research Centre, where the legendary primatologist worked and was buried.
Rwanda SafariTours arranges all activities in Volcanoes NP: permits, transfers from Kigali (2.5 hours), accommodation near the park and expert RDB-certified guides for every activity.
