About This Tour
The Kigali Genocide Memorial is Rwanda's central site of memory for the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, in which approximately 800,000 people were killed in 100 days. The memorial is located in Gisozi, a hill in Kigali where over 250,000 victims are buried. It is the most important and moving site of memory in Rwanda, and visiting with a knowledgeable guide significantly deepens understanding of both the tragedy and Rwanda's extraordinary recovery.
Our guided memorial tour is led by a Kigali-based expert guide who provides sensitive, historically accurate context throughout. The memorial has three permanent exhibitions: The 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi (a chronological account of events), Wasted Lives (comparative genocide history worldwide) and Children's Room (a deeply affecting tribute to child victims). The gardens and burial grounds are places of reflection.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial tour is combined in this half-day programme with key Kigali city highlights: the recently renovated Kigali Convention Centre (one of Africa's most architecturally striking buildings), views of the city from the historic Hotel des Mille Collines (the "Hotel Rwanda" made famous by the 2004 film), and a drive through central Kigali to understand the city's remarkable transformation.
This tour is appropriate for visitors aged 12 and above. The content is historically significant and sensitively presented. Many visitors find it one of the most meaningful experiences of their Rwanda trip — understanding where Rwanda came from makes the country's present achievements all the more extraordinary.
